In a category stacked with some of Hollywood’s most celebrated talents — including Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet — Aramayo’s victory for his performance in I Swear took fans and critics by surprise and cemented his status as one of the most exciting rising stars in international cinema.

The win is not just another award — it’s a seismic shift in how emerging actors are being recognized and marks a defining moment in Aramayo’s career. Here’s a deeper look at his unforgettable night at the BAFTAs and why his triumph is resonating across Hollywood.

A Night of Surprises at the BAFTAs

The 2026 BAFTA ceremony, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, was filled with memorable moments — but none quite like Aramayo’s victory. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another dominated much of the evening, winning Best Film, Best Director, and multiple technical awards, and Jessie Buckley scored Best Leading Actress for Hamnet. Yet it was Aramayo who delivered the night’s most talked‑about surprise.

Aramayo’s Best Actor win came over an extraordinary lineup of nominees including:

Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another)

Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme)

Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon)

Michael B. Jordan (Sinners)

Jesse Plemons (Bugonia)

Despite this star‑studded field, Aramayo’s powerful and deeply emotional portrayal of John Davidson, a real‑life campaigner with severe Tourette syndrome in the drama I Swear, convinced BAFTA voters he deserved the honour.

Who Is Robert Aramayo? From Rising Star to Best Actor

Before this win, Robert Aramayo was perhaps best known to international audiences for his role as Elrond in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. But it was his performance as John Davidson in I Swear that truly showcased his dramatic range.

The role required Aramayo to embody the physical and emotional complexity of living with Tourette syndrome — a condition characterized by involuntary movements and vocal tics — while capturing Davidson’s resilience and humanity. Critics and viewers alike praised his nuanced approach to the character, calling it both heartfelt and transformative.

In addition to his Best Actor win, Aramayo also took home the EE Rising Star Award at the same ceremony — making him one of the few actors to secure both honours in one night. This dual achievement highlights both his current success and his anticipated future impact in film.

The Emotional Acceptance Speech

Aramayo’s acceptance speech was heartfelt and humble, capturing the genuine disbelief he felt standing among some of his greatest inspirations. “I absolutely can’t believe it,” he said during his speech, addressing fellow nominees. “I can’t believe that I’m looking at people like you, in the same category as you, never mind that I’m standing here.”

He thanked his director and co‑stars, as well as the real John Davidson, whose life story inspired the film. The actor also shared a touching anecdote about meeting Ethan Hawke — one of his fellow nominees — during a visit to Juilliard, where Hawke had spoken to students about longevity and craftsmanship in acting.

This sincerity resonated with audiences around the world, making his victory feel not only historic but deeply personal.

Why This Win Matters

1. A Break with Traditional Expectations

In awards history, Best Leading Actor categories often favour established Hollywood names — actors with decades of experience or high‑profile careers. Aramayo’s win disrupts that pattern, proving that outstanding performances from less established actors can outshine even the most iconic film stars when given proper recognition.

2. Spotlight on I Swear and Representation

I Swear tells the story of John Davidson, a Scottish real‑life figure who became a leading advocate for Tourette syndrome awareness. Aramayo’s win has drawn conversation not only about his talent but about the importance of portraying underrepresented stories with empathy and authenticity.

The film’s acclaim at the BAFTAs — including recognition for casting as well — reinforces how stories rooted in real human experience can resonate deeply with audiences and critics alike.

3. Awards Season Momentum

With the BAFTAs occurring early in awards season, Aramayo’s win positions him as a contender to watch in future ceremonies including the Oscars. Historically, BAFTA winners often generate buzz that carries forward into other major awards, and industry analysts are already discussing how this victory might influence the broader awards landscape.

Reactions from Hollywood and Fans

The reaction to Aramayo’s BAFTA win has been a mix of surprise, admiration, and celebration. Many fans took to social media to express excitement that a rising British actor could eclipse long‑time favourites like DiCaprio and Chalamet. Critics have praised the BAFTAs for making a bold choice, highlighting Aramayo’s emotional depth and commitment to the role.

Industry observers also noted that his win reflects a larger trend toward rewarding performances that break emotional and cultural ground rather than those tied to box office or franchise fame. This shift suggests that award bodies are looking to elevate fresh voices and stories that might previously have been overlooked.

What This Means for Aramayo’s Career

For Aramayo, this BAFTA win could be a defining moment — one that elevates him from critically praised actor to global film star. Already showing versatility in roles ranging from fantasy to biographical drama, his award‑winning performance is likely to open doors to a broader range of opportunities in both mainstream and independent cinema.

Film insiders speculate that Aramayo’s name will appear on casting lists for major upcoming projects, and directors seeking emotionally complex leading performances may view him as a first‑choice collaborator.

The Broader Awards Landscape and BAFTA’s Role

The BAFTAs have long served as a bellwether for the international awards season, often spotlighting films and performances that later gain recognition at the Oscars and other major ceremonies. Aramayo’s win highlights how the British Academy continues to champion cinematic artistry and diversity in storytelling — even when it means defying popular expectations.

This year’s ceremony also celebrated a wide range of talent:

One Battle After Another dominated with six wins including Best Film and Best Director.

Jessie Buckley won Best Leading Actress for Hamnet.

Wunmi Mosaku took Best Supporting Actress for Sinners.

In this context, Aramayo’s win stands out as a major feel‑good moment — a reminder that the BAFTAs can elevate performances that touch the heart and resonate with authenticity.

Aramayo’s Impact: What Fans Are Saying

Social media has been buzzing with reactions to Aramayo’s win. Many commenters praised the BAFTAs for taking a “fresh” and “courageous” choice, lauding Aramayo’s craft and emotional performance. Some fans have even said the actor’s win feels like a catalyst for a new era of award recognition — one that values impactful storytelling over star power alone.

Others noted how Aramayo’s comments about Ethan Hawke and being inspired by veteran actors illustrate a blend of humility and ambition that resonates with audiences who want to see genuine talent rewarded.

Conclusion: A Victory That Redefines Expectations

Robert Aramayo’s Best Actor win at the 2026 BAFTAs is more than a personal triumph — it’s a milestone moment in modern cinema. In beating Hollywood royalty such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet, Aramayo has demonstrated that powerful performances rooted in real humanity can outshine even the most celebrated names.

As awards season continues, his achievement will undoubtedly inspire both filmmakers and actors, reinforcing the idea that distinction and artistry matter most on the world stage. Whether I Swear continues to garner accolades or Aramayo gains even more recognition, one thing is clear: his star is rising — and the film industry is taking notice.

Robert Aramayo stunned the film world at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) on February 22, 2026, by winning Best Leading Actor in one of the biggest upsets in recent awards history.
